Dog Toilet Training Tips


How many times have you caught your dog peeing in the living room? Are you getting frustrated because you can’t seem to teach your dog proper housebreaking? Well, the following tips may help you out. Just be patient with your pet and sooner, things would work out for both of you.

1. Know when your puppy needs to go.

Most dog owners get frustrated with their pets because they tend to pee and move at any part of the house. However, once you understand your dog’s toilet habits, accidents can easily be eliminated. Dogs tend to move after eating or drinking. So it is only mandatory that you have to take your dog out after each meal.

2. Schedule feeding.

Because your dog needs to move body wastes after eating, it is only important that you feed it at a regular schedule. Two to three meals should be sufficient for puppies. For older dogs, two meals are usually enough. Don’t leave unfinished food on its bowl or free feed your dog. This would disrupt its eating schedule, thus making it harder to teach proper toilet habits. Give your pet its food at the same hour everyday so that you can take it out at almost exactly at the same hour too.

3. Designate a toilet for your dog.

If your dog needs to move, direct it to a certain spot in the house or a portion of the backyard to do what it has to do. Eventually, it would recognize the spot as a place to eliminate. Soon, you don’t have to take it out every time in needs to go because it knows exactly where and how. Once trained, your dog would go to the same spot every single time. If in case your dog accidentally peed on a restricted part of the house, admonish it lightly but firmly. Clean the area immediately. This shows your pet that it is not supposed to move there.

4. Praise your dog once it asks to go outside to eliminate.

With patience, your dog would eventually learn how to move outside on its own. Once this happens, you have to give your dog some treats to reward the good deed. A loving pat on the head would also show him that what he did is right. Praising your dog can do a lot of wonders. And it would mean your dog that has finally learned the art of housebreaking.

The whole process of doggie toilet training could be a long and tedious one. Be prepared and wait for the time that your dog fully learns it. It might mean ten more accidents on the carpet or on the couch for you. But then again, these are all part of the joys of owning a dog. If you’re not too happy with all these slight inconveniences or cleaning up after your pet, then you should seriously consider owning a puppy at all.
