Different Dog Breeds Require Different Training Methods

There are so many different breeds of dogs that for the owner it may be preferable not to see dogs as alike in too many ways. In some cases it may be preferable to emphasize the differences over the similarities. A Jack Russell terrier for example is very different to a Great Dane in its looks thoughts and behavior.

The terrier is very excitable whereas the Great Dane is much calmer. Similarly Collies and Golden Retrievers are very different as the Retriever is fun loving and more excitable. With some breeds such as a Chihuahua and a German Shepherd the only thing they have in common is the name dog.

Differences in size and temperament mean training should be tailored to the breed of dog. While patience is always a necessity in training, some dogs require more patience than others. German Shepherds for example are intelligent and take to obedience commands much more readily than the equally smart Jack Russell who is more willful and thus requires different techniques.

Distraction techniques work well with terriers that are extremely active, high energy dogs. They have a natural ability to detect movement and will go after whatever is producing it. It is a real challenge to ensure that they stay focused with their eyes on you use treats and toys to attract their attention and keep it focused on you.

Collies take well to most training but their loyal and protective natures can present its own challenges. A collie will bark and chase any stranger who they think is a threat to the family. This is all well and good when they are guarding the house at night, but can be a nuisance if it barks whenever a child walks along the sidewalk. If this is the problem then it may be necessary to use a bark collar during the day. This should encourage the dog to associate daylight with discouragement while still functioning as a watch dog at night.

Dalmatians are great companions but their strength and extreme energy can prove a problem if they do not have sufficient exercise. If you plan on owning one of these dogs then you should be prepared to spend extra time in walking and exercising them. Dalmatians also need plenty of space because they run at top speed; their owner should be able to toss a ball some distance while at the same time remaining in command. They are loyal dogs but need an owner with the presence to assume the alpha or lead position.

Dogs are as much an individual as humans and your training regimen should pay attention to their individuality as well as their breed. Training should also take into account the particular psychology of a dog.
